Superhero comics and manga circulate in various media, from informal conversations and schools to t-shirt prints. As a highly popular medium, comics have broad potential, being usable in science communication, sociocultural discussions, and various school context contents. This article aims to reflect on the complexity of newsstand comics, highlighting both their visual and narrative coding and their historical relationships with science education. We attempt to demystify the idea that reading a comic book is simple, showing that comics have interrelations with science beyond their content. Our work focuses mainly on manga and the publishers Marvel Comics and DC Comics, which, according to recent research, are used in science education merely as content supplements. Above all, we believe this article can foster discussions about the limits and potential of newsstand comics in science education.
