LINKS BETWEEN BRAZIL AND HAITI THROUGH SOCCER: AN ANALYSIS OF THE FILM “O DIA EM QUE O BRASIL ESTEVE AQUI” (THE DAY BRAZIL WAS HERE)
Abstract: Based on the documentary “The day Brazil was here”, the article seeks to find the links between Brazil and Haiti that allowed Brazilian soccer to be used as a soft power tool (Nye, 2004). The film deals with the visit of the Brazilian team to Haiti in August 2004 for the “Jogo da Paz” (Peace Game), an episode that took place as part of the United Nations Peace Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) commanded by Brazil. In this sense, as a methodological strategy, the categories of Vuving (2009) are used, in which soft power translates into benignity, brilliance and beauty. With these categories, we observe that the historical links between both countries allow characterizing the Brazilian team as 'bombagai', extraordinary and holder of the beautiful game. Together, the characteristics show the strength of Brazilian soccer as a power tool on the international stage and how it was able to integrate Haitians into the UN peacekeeping mission.
