HORIZONS AND CHALLENGES OF LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN OPEN SCIENCE

This text seeks, on the one hand, to mark the editorial re-founding of Espirales, consolidated with the publication of the ninth volume of the journal; and, on the other hand, to reflect on the horizons and challenges of Open Science in Latin America and the Caribbean. We present our reflections in two parts. In the first one, we address the tensions between academic neoliberalism, the publishing market, and critical internationalization. In the second, we present the paths and commitments that guide Espirales in this scenario, providing analyses of the teams that made up the journal and highlighting fundamental elements of the new Editorial Policy and Internal Regulations, effective as of 2025. More than a presentation of the excellent volume published throughout this year, the reflections contained herein represent an institutional assessment and, above all, a letter to the future of journals that, like Espirales, confront the neoliberalization of academia and the publishing market in defense of supportive and transformative editorial projects.
