INDIGENOUS CHILD LABOR IN THE CROSS-BORDER CITIES OF FOZ DO IGUAÇU AND CIUDAD DEL ESTE

Abstract

This article addresses the issue of child labor performed by indigenous children on the border between the cities of Foz do Iguaçu, in Brazil, and Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay. In this sense, the study that can be found in these pages seeks to present the current status of this expression of the social issue, under the record of the work of indigenous children, by searching for data from the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the
Caribbean (ECLAC), released after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodology used was a bibliographic survey, and the main hypothesis considered refers to the migrations of indigenous children motivated by the dispossession of lands occupied by the extended families of which they are part, resulting in forced or compulsory migration. The considerations noted at the end of these pages
point to the persistence of a structural problem generated by capitalism, highlight the scarcity of data and information available on indigenous child labor and highlight the various gaps that exist around the subject, in terms of public policies specifically dedicated to to that question.
