Abstract

This paper considers Paulo Freire's work “Pedagogia do Oprimido”, published in Brazil fifty years ago, as its guiding thread. Issues related to educational practices and human relations are analyzed, with the aim of explaining how education should foster liberation and emancipation. The historical context of Latin America in the twentieth century, including its multiple dictatorships, is reported. Educational themes, their crisis, and dilemmas are correlated to the current political and social situation in Brazil. Freire’s thought, permeated by concepts from Philosophy has been brought to the point of inferring that he approached education as a methodology rather than creating a ‘method’ as a technique. Finally, it invites us to discuss the urgency of reflecting on promoting Freirean epistemology as a need, which aims to stimulate critical reflection, alterity, and the liberation of subjects dialectically; that is, to create liberation so that both the liberated and those who create domination can revisit themselves, seeking to build social dynamics that promote the common good.

Marcio Jose Silva, UNILA

Graduado em Letras (2008) e Mestre em Educação, Arte e História da Cultura pela Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (2016-2018), onde foi bolsista mérito pelo Mackpesquisa e pela CAPES. Atua junto às comunidades na periferia de São Paulo, bairro do Itaim Paulista, desenvolvendo estudos quanto à práxis educativa com ênfase na Pedagogia Social. Tem livros e artigos publicados sobre Direitos Humanos, Sociologia do Direito, Educação e Interseccionalidades entre gênero, raça e etnia. Atualmente curda Medicina na Universidade Federal da Integração Latino-America (UNILA).

Renan Antônio da Silva, Universidade Federal de São Carlos

Foi Bolsista CNPq e CAPES. Possui diversos estágios pós- doutorais pelo Brasil e Exterior. Doutor em Educação Escolar (2018) pela UNESP/ Araraquara. Realizou o Estágio Doutoral com bolsa CAPES/PDSE, junto ao Centro em Investigação Social (CIS) pelo Instituto Universitário de Lisboa - ISCTE - Portugal (2015-2016). Mestre em Desenvolvimento Regional e Políticas Públicas (2014). Licenciado em Ciências Sociais (2011). Docente Permanente (orientador de mestrado e doutorado) no Programa de Pós - Graduação em Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade (PPGCTS) da Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFScar). Pesquisador Externo do Centre for Law, Democracy, and Society (CLDS) da Queen Mary University of London. Líder no Grupo de Pesquisa em Educação, Cultura, Memória e Arte (GEPECUMA - UNESP). Atuou como Coordenador de Ensino e Pesquisa na Oxford Latam Brasil (2023/2024). Membro da Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia (SBS). Membro da American Sociological Association (ASA), fundado em 1905 (EUA).
