THE EPISTEMOLOGY OF PAULO FREIRE AND A YELL FOR LIBERATION

2025-08-08

In “The Epistemology of Paulo Freire and the Cry for Liberation”, authors Márcio José Silva and Renan Antônio da Silva analyze the book Pedagogy of the Oppressed and reaffirm that education is a practice of freedom and liberation. The authors argue that, for Paulo Freire, education is not about applying a ready-made method, but rather about cultivating critical awareness and individual autonomy.

The article denounces the phenomenon of education being used as an instrument of domination throughout history, including under authoritarian regimes and within neoliberal contexts. By contrast, Freire’s approach values dialogue, the other, and human dignity. Freire sees education as a political, ethical, and transformative process.

Drawing on the ideas of philosophers and thinkers such as Arendt, Bourdieu, and Gadamer, the authors stress that true freedom requires constant reflection, responsibility, and action. The article warns of the current dangers posed by disinformation, authoritarian conservatism, and ideological manipulation.

This work defends Freire’s epistemology and proposes an education committed to the public good, aimed at forming conscious individuals capable of transforming society in a spirit of solidarity and justice.
